skulptur projekte münster 07

The project Beautiful City took place within the framework of the fourth Skulptur Projekte Münster. Since 1977, this large scale exhibition takes place every 10 years and invites artists from all over the world to create new works throughout the city of Münster, Germany. The artists examine the character of contemporary sculpture, its self-positioning in as well as its capacity to change the appearance of the public realm. By incorporating the works of art, the city over time gradually changes its face.

The site

Beautiful City took place in a park at the north of Schlossgarten, between the permanent public sculptures of George Brecht, Three void stones (Skulptur Projekte 1987), and herman de vries, Sanctuarium (Skulptur Projekte 1997), two works that both call for meditation. A big white tent hosted the weekly talks and the library. Outside the tent, an alternating group of students set up camp, tending to the site while waiting for the next speaker to arrive.
The site was open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
